Chemical Perturbations

Around the repository in the near field of the Boom Clay, a chemical gradient will be observed. It is therefore important to examine the impact of chemical components that may leach from waste and packaging materials on the properties and stability of clay. Moreover, excavating a disposal facility inevitably introduces oxygen into a geological formation that was in anoxic conditions for millions of years. This causes oxidation, leading to other chemical perturbations.
